Many of you know that I made the money I needed to bankroll my RNG through 40 from a certain wonderful Valkurm Emperor drop back in June. Well, I have run out of money lately, and am looking for another Emperor to fund me through my next 10 or so levels. Unfortunately, I am not having any luck what with all the new people camping him since I last did.
When I first camped the emp, there were only two people other than me there. It was about 6am MST (I work nights) and we camped the sucker for three hours. Each spawn was nearer to one of us than the others, so each one of us got a drop. It was quick, and it was painless, and my 38 THF handled the Emp without much problem (I did two hour it, but probably didnt need to).
Now that I need more money, I actually considered farming (which is what Sam does, and even posted in the mailing list his new scheme for making money). But farming is so tedious. You run around training and killing mobs, or looking for some tiny unseen point only to have someone else run up and take it from you as your hatchet breaks. Ugh...
With NM camping I can leave my system on, checking occassionally (especially around the time I know the NM should next spawn), while I watch TV, read a book, browse the web, talk in IRC, or whatever. The point is, even though NM camping may take a long time, it's not really as hands-on as farming, so I can spend my time doing other things. And the pay-off can be so great!
The problem is, I think with recent patches they have made many of the NM drops harder to get. I have fought the emp six times in the last week and not gotten one drop! Plus, now there are so many people camping the beast that the competition is nearing what it is for Leaping Lizzie. More people means less likelihood of catching him, and it means the AH market will be flooded with more hairpins thus devaluing them (the hairpin is already worth less than 300k gil then when I sold mine).
So I am feeling burnt with this NM camping. If I had spent the same time farming, I could have easily earned 200k gil... which isn't quite what I would have earned from the emp drop, but it's certainly a lot more than I have earned anyway (which is probably only around 15k from all the gobs and flies I killed to clear them out of my radar ;-)
What should I do guys? Cave in and go farming even though it will bore me to tears, or keep trying NMs? If I keep trying NMs, what are some other good ones I can go after that aren't camped so much like Lizzie and the Emp?
To farm or not to farm......
Guys, this is the most helpful information that I have to offer, I think. It may be a bit long, but I'm hoping it may help break up some of the routine of solo play.
I have been tormented with this same dilema during many hours of solo play in this game. Once I hit lvl30 with my RDM, I instantly began unlocking advanced jobs and mission/quests for game. After making some quick advances thru this period (Especially thanks to our good friend Sam's help along the way), I instantly got into NM hunting to break up the routine of trying to farm items. I found that on days I could spend the time to log points thru E.Ronfaure that I had recorded on my map during my trips, and could cover the area quickly. I was focused on my woodworking skills during this time also, which meant I never needed to buy supplies. I found that if I kept lvln up my low lvl jobs while farming Ronfaure, I stacked crystals easily. I would chain (EP)bats in Ronp. Tomb with no problem.
How does this help you ask? 1)(EP) still yielded Wind crystals. These sell for about 1.5k or up. I never had to purchase crystals while working on my woodworking skills, since I farmed my own. See where I'm going with this...free wood, free crystals=free crafting!!
2)Bat drop bat wings/bat fangs/vials of fiend's blood. They were stacked easily and also sell quite nicely in the Auction House.
3)The easiest experience you'll ever get in this game. Sure you're only getting 20-30experience points per battle, but you only need 2k to level up!! Chain 5 bats, that's at least 100exp.
This made those weak low levels much more enjoyable, and added to my wealth by doing it.
So what does this have to do with NM hunting?
I read up on surrounding areas and the different creatures contained in each region, reseaching information on all of the NMs in the area. I found that I ran across several areas that contained lower level monsters, dropped decent items, and that were rarely populated. None of these would yield a cash-in of 300k, but being able to get multiple drops with little or NO competition at all...increasing my chances of getting the rare drop. I gained 3 rare items, each selling for 25k,within 2-3 days. I would fight low level monsters (ex. Bees, Toadstools, Bats, etc) to pass the time and would quickly gain several stacks of items for sell. So within just a short amount of time, I could amass gil steadyily. I remind you...my highest level job that I have currently is 31. So a few of the NMs I fought made for interesting battles, while others were cakewalks. So at higher levels, you are capable of taking down tougher NMs (even if not as famous as Lizzy) that bring in less gil, but can be more productive. Rare drops, stacks of items, and sometimes cheap crystals can at least make you feel that you're time isn't being as wasted.
This is just my experiences in FFXI, and are definitly not the "right" way. I was looking for a way to make farming a little more entertaining....and it has worked for me. Good luck and maybe this will help in a way.
Personal preference and ... location location location ;-)
As we've discussed in IRC (#clanam on irc.freenode.net, feel free to join us sometime) several times, it really does come down to personal preference. If you like the thrill of hunting NMs and dont mind the potential hours of boredom and probably frustration (tabke, I've been there in IRC as you have had the Valk Emp stolen from you... so many bad words.. my eyes, they bleed ;-) then do it. If you like the consistent income with occassional periods of overly intense competition (Buburimu used to be such a quiet place) and dont mind the repetitive tedium of farming then you'll do that.
However, I think Brian has a really keen plan: He seems to be combining both farming and NM hunting. Sure, he isnt going for the big kills, but he is still getting nice drops. Honestly, if you can make it work, I'd wager that would be the way to go.
The biggest problem as I see it is location: Brian just so happens to be geographically located where this sort of stuff is possible (then again, tabke, so are you, you both are from Sandy). Down in Windy, every *good* NM is camped all the time. We have a lot of throw-away NMs that drop worthless items (damn you Eyy Mon the Ironbreaker and Zhuu Buxu the Silent!) and the few we do have that drop similar things to what Brian is talking about (Spiny Spipi, Serpopard Ishtar, et al) have spread out spawn areas and are heavily camped. Then, over in Bastok what do you have? Name another NM besides Lizzy... go ahead! You can't can you? (Well, okay, Geyser Lizard is there, but I haven't ever gotten a good drop from him ;-)
In other words, at our levels I hate to say it but it looks like where Brian is is the best place for this. Maybe once we all get a bit higher we will have other places. Maybe not.
At any rate, for your level, tabke, I have a great place where you can get items that sell for 20k per stack and a NM drop that sells for 15k. Next time we're on together, send me a /tell and I'll point you to it.

All this could be your's for just $19.95
I agree that it is totally a personal preference...like I said...I don't believe there is such a thing as the "best/right" way. I love hunting NMs, but figure it's worth slaying local beasts in between spawn times in case I get no drops. At least I can walk away with a pocketfull of change.
I do agree that my location is beneficial. Again, using sites like allakazham.com to research NMs, I read up on each area. Within just 2 zones we have access to Jaggedy-Ear Jack, Valkurm Emp, and Lumbering Lambert. I spent a lot of time trying out side NMs....found some that were very prosperous...and then there was the Hundred Scar Hadjawa. DAMN YOU !!!!!! 0 FOR 12 !!!! *grumblegrumble*
One example-Ranpeare's Tomb is a nice region for this style of farming. If you venture into the deepest regions of the dungeon you will even find some EP Gobs, but most things you encounter are weak. You can fight tons of skeletons which drop chest keys regularly. Spend your time farming skeletons and bats while camping the Crypt Ghost (Not the tomb ghost at the actual grave) and also the gruel that spawns around the corner. Camping these 2 zones, farming while you cover the areas (and getting chest keys) can make Ranp. Tomb a very worthwhile venture. I have fought the Crypt ghost several times, and have gotten the rare drop twice, along with several treasure chests along the way. This item sells for $25k at the AH the last time I checked. Cash money...
I always looked for ways to do mulitple things during one trip. I found this kept me being bored. Even if it was just farming for a quest item while roaming an area, I kept a check list of things that I needed in each area. This way, I always had something to do no matter where I was.
Anyways, this is just my philosophy. I find it enjoyable during those times I feel like playing solo. I don't promise results, but don't see how multitasking can hurt any. :) So if anyone is able to use any of what I said, definitly let me know about your story. I'd love to hear about your events, and any advice that you gather.
Happy Hunting.
