"You're damned if you do and damned if you don't." - Bart Simpson

This phrase goes back a lot farther than Mr. Simpson, but it's no less true for my generation than it was for the one that originally claimed it. Since I started FFXI I've made a lot of stupid mistakes and sometimes it just seemed like the world was against me. In an attempt to stop others from following in my footsteps I'm going to post my top three warnings (rants) that all happened yesterday.

3. FFXI Time Reference Webpages

These site are incredibly helpful. They have useful information about air/ship times, the current day, and even RS Equipment. This would be all well and good, but I didn't know the page based itself completely off of 'my' system clock. My system clock has never worked properly and I've never gone in to change the battery. So when trying to plant Deathballs I completely missed Lightsday because my system clock told the page it was 2 hours earlier. Obviously when my clock got around to getting two hours later, I had totally missed Lightsday and had to wait another 6 hours. Making me not a happy camper.

2. Windhurst Quest 2-2 - A Testing Time

This can be a fun mission, especially if you don't go alone. It can also get you a couple hundred experience points along the way. Nothing incredible, but why not. You are given a doll that counts how many mobs you maim within the next hour (1 game day). You're to head up to Tahrongi Canyon and begin whomping at will and make sure to return 'before' the day is up.

1. WATCH the clock! Even a couple minutes late and you start all over.

2. FIND ways to get up there quickly. If you're like me and don't have chocobo, then get a warp scroll from the W.W. at the gate. It's 750 conquest points each. Then set your home point at the crystal in Waters.

3. Do NOT return early. He will only accept the doll within the 'last' hour (2.5 minutes) of your day.

Needless to say, I failed the first time. Maior consoled me and told me he had failed his first time too. So I spent 1500 conquest points in the end...grrr. I also ended up spending two hours on this mission only to remember in the end, it's ONLY for fame. You still have to give 12 crystals to get to Mission 3: The Three Kingdoms!

3. Eco-Warrior Quest

This is the largest thorn in my hind end. There's a version of this quest in each city, but I did the Windy version. Basically you need to get an alliance together, head up to the Shakrami Maze, talk to the V.E.R.M.I.N. representative at the front of the cave, and go kill Wyrms. This much I understood.
It took two hours to get a full, 18 person alliance together, and I never thought it'd happen. We all headed up to the maze, got there, slapped on the ointment to pull out the Wyrms, and got in position. The Wyrms came out, we slaughtered them, and I just stood there. There was no treasure, no drops. I 'assumed' they'd keep appearing and we'd keep killing until we all got a drop. This, was NOT the case.

As soon as you kill the Wyrms there is an area, on the ground, near the skeleton spawning devices that is labeled '???'. Yes, this is the stupidest labeling ever. Unbeknownst to me, you NEED to click on this! It's the only way to get the digested Wyrm meat you need to bring back. There are No drops and No treasure like the sub-job quest. Once the Wyrms are dead, grab this and run for your life. My alliance was slaughtered before I found out I was the only guy to fail this quest.

Yesterday was such a crock...luckily I'm about to head-out to Valkurm, San'D, and Bastok to level my WAR subjob and complete Mission 3. So, who wants to fight the Dragon with me???

THF Link

Heheh, sorry bout all that Rap... we'll get you through this stuff in the end. Perhaps now that you've almost successfully done Eco War, I'll join you next time and you can show me what I need to do (remember, I'm yet to do it successfully after 3 tries ;-)

BTW, I found a link for you that is a guide for THFs. Check it out here. Good stuff, indeed! The equipment guide was especially enlightening for me.

Sucka

Damn, wish I would have seen that link. I spent too much time as RNG with sword before I figured out that my skill in it sucked!

Life sucks and then you die. But you only lose a few EXP points.

Sorry to hear about your travails. I know I've had my ups and downs in this game too. For example, when I went to do Rank 2 Mission 3 (the Dragon) I forgot to talk to the representative in Windy before heading out to Giddeus. When my party got to the burning circle, we clicked on it and everyone entered the arena except me. They did manage to survive (we had two monks and they each did their two hour) and even got server record. But I didn't get to complete the mission and had to round up more people to do it with me again. ARGH!

For the Eco Warrior, yes Windy is the hardest place for it. The Sandy one is a push over. But get used to the "???" marking, that signifies quest locations all over Vana diel. Of course, all this means that you need to be careful around them. Don't go running around clicking every "???" you see because sometimes that means you'll get slaughtered ;-)

Sam and I have been talking about doing Mission 3-3 this next weekend, maybe we can all team up and do your Mission 2-3 at that time as well. I really loved 2-3, and it was almost as much fun as 3-3.
